A failed revolution in 2011, a string of tragic airline disasters and bombings – including one in 2019 that killed 16 people near the pyramids of Giza – and, of course, Covid-19.
But tourism in Egypt – one of the key components of the country’s economy – has roared back with a vengeance.
The direct Easyjet flight from Glasgow (also available from Edinburgh) to the coastal city of Hurghada – which was launched at the end of last year – is six-hours long but very manageable, especially for a very healthy return ticket price of £145 and upwards
Nestled on the red sea, you have your pick of luxurious resorts – including the five-star all-inclusive Rixos Premium Magawish.

Each room is grandiose, and some villas (including my own) have their own pool.
And with ten bars, six à la carte restaurants, a private beach and relaxing spa to boot – it would have been easy to spend my entire trip here were it not for the incredible activities and historical outings Egypt has to offer.
Our first full day, courtesy of EasyJet Holidays, saw us take in Hurghada.
This coastal city was once a small fishing village but is now one of the largest resort destinations along the Red Sea coast, stretching close to 40 km. And it is only growing.
Visit the sprawling indoor market where you can find local spices and ingredients aplenty. And head down to the marina to sample the city’s fresh seafood. The city is also the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding islands, which are renowned for their clear blue waters and excellent snorkelling.
A must visit – especially for the adrenaline junkies – lies just outside of town. Hurghada borders the Arabian desert where you can rent out quad bikes or dune buggies and visit a Bedouin village.
Then, cap off your day watching traditional Egyptian dancing as the sun sets whilst enjoying a full table of grilled meats, fresh salads and enormous flatbreads. Desert trips from £73 (experiences.easyjet.com).
The historic city of Luxor is also just a day trip away. Take a private coach from your resort to marvel at the Karnak temple (above) before taking a boat across the Nile and onto the Valley of the Kings.
The Tomb of Tutankhamun may be the most famous but my favourite was the Tomb of Ramesses IV (above), whose colourful and vibrant artwork was by far the best preserved. Day trips from Hurghada cost from £137, including lunch and entrance fees (experiences.easyjet.com).
EasyJet Holidays (easyjet.com) has seven nights all-inclusive at Rixos Premium Magawish from £1600 per person, with other resorts at different price points also on offer. This includes flights from Glasgow, 23kg luggage and transfers on beach holidays.
